On February 9th bodytonic's Tayor gets togged out for his much anticpated Space Camp debut. He was one for the first DJs in Ireland to switch from vinyl to cds and it was an easy transition as most of his records were warped, scratched or belonged to John Mahon. Normally we would have asked him for a chart but there is no need as he plays the same records in most sets, so expect to hear m.a.n.d.y – oh superman or mfa – the difference.

As ever he will be joined by the Space Camp residents who will be getting through a ton of new goodies including new material from: Hercules & Love Affair, Radio Slave, Peter Visti, Christian Prommer, Lindstrom, Smith & Mudd, Chicken Lips, Maelstrom, Lee Douglas, Alden Tyrell, Mock n Toof etc etc

One of the first records I bought React 2 Rhythm "Intoxication" which originally came out in (1991). I still think it’s an uplifting record though it may sound a bit dated nowadays. I always played the leftfield remix. Incidentally, leftfield are probably one of the best electronic acts I have ever seen. You can download the track below

The Wizard

Paul Hardcastle is largely known for his 1985 number one hit "19". One of my favourite tracks is his cover version of D-Train's classic "You're the One For Me", which is segued with his own compositions "Daybreak" and "A.M." and its simply fantastic. When I first started buying records, one of my favourite labels was Soma. Based in Glasgow and set up back in 1991, over the years has seen a host of includes producers like Glaswegian natives Slam & Ewan Pearson to Daft Punk and Funk D'Void release quality music.
The first soma record I bought was ‘Positive Education’ by Stuart McMillan & Orde Meikle (Slam) but I always preferred their first release, which was the seminal 'Eterna'.

Gibson Brothers

One of my favourite disco records is the Gibson Brothers track "Ooh What A Life" and I have often heard in sets by the likes of Rahaan, Mudd and Danny Wang. The instrumental version, which is on Island records, is as as good as disco gets in my opinion. It is a record produced by Daniel Vangarde who son is Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk fame.

The Dramatics

I was watching the film Dead Presidents recently and it has a great soundtrack with all the soul greats included from Issac Hayes to The Temptations. There are some cracking tracks like "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go", by Curtis Mayfield and "If You Want Me To Stay", by Sly & The Family Stone. But the stand out track for me is The Dramatics – Get up and get down which I often play early on when Djing.

Space Camp would like to big up anyone who has been at one of our events last year.

2007 saw a host of DJs play for us in a multitude of venues. Some of the highlights for us were Nordic legends Prins Thomas & Todd Terje, Dirtybird Claude Von Stroke playing his third gig for us in the pod, Mano Le Toughs first live show, the French mob of I:Cube + Joakim + Pilooski, Ultrashock, Dancepig, Space Camp Birthday, In Flagranti, Eskimo’s Dirk De Ruyck, Dj Historys Bill Brewster and our course our trusty residents

We have also had some quality nights in the Village for our monthly Saturday residency with Manchesters Marco Giannini and Polaroids Joe Morris & Nick Smyth doing us proud. It was also the year of some cracking co-promotions with the likes of Downtownsounds, Shock & the Winter Olympics culminating in whopper of a NYE party.

Next year we will continue our monthly night in the Village and we will be doing some monthly parties in RiRa. We will be welcoming back the likes of Todd Terje in February and bringing over some new blood like Aeroplane in April. Keep a watchful eye on www.spacecamp.ie for more info.

Lets Get Brutal

I’m not sure what happened to Aldo Marin's Nitro Deluxe project but one of the first house records I bought was, Let's Get Brutal and it still features in my sets. It’s a milestone record for me and when I hear the keyboard riff, it reminds of all the early Chicago house records that I bought. And although its production is not very polished due to the restrictive sounds from the hardware of the time, I think it adds to the track and prefer it that way. Viva Acid House..

Break for Love

Raze was formed in 1986 and the idea was to have a different lead singer on each song. The main man was Vaughn Mason who’s previous claim to fame was the roller disco classic Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll, with his Raze project he teamed up with soul boy Keith Thompson for the seminal track "Break 4 Love", which in my opinion is one of the best vocal house songs ever recorded.

Flicking through my record collection, I came across Kariya - Let Me Love You For Tonight which I was early hours classic that was a staple at the Hacienda. A real mid-tempo groover, which has had host of mixes over, the years but none come close to the original. It first surfaced on Sleeping Bag in ’88 and I have always loved the intro since I first heard it on a Frankie Knuckles mix way back when

Dave Lee has released music under a host of different aliases. The first record of his that I bought was under the moniker of Joey Negro, and the track was called Do It Believe It, which was his first release under that name. He has since gone on to be a prolific producer and remixer with a hefty amount of tracks under his belt and his edit of Neal Howard – The Gathering is often played down at space camp.

Norwegian man about town Bjorn Torske has finally delivered his new album titled “Feil Knapp”. This is his first album in six years, so he has taken his time. Thankfully the end product is worth waiting for and its an album that Im sure the likes of the Idjut Boys or Lindstrom or would gladly put their name to. It has the weird melodies and harmonic electronica we have come to expect and I heartily reccommend this album.

A new project by Vito De Luca & DJ Stephen under the guise of Aeroplane has been hitting the spot as of late. Think cosmic disco or balearic grooves, there have been few space camp sets this year that haven't featured one of their tracks. A Mountain Of One are a London based mob comprising of Mo Morris, Zeben Jameson and Leo Elstob and their cd 'A Mountain of One Collected works' has some of the best music that we have heard this year. Here at Space Camp we love their melodic electronica, as well as their blissful take on psychedelic rock.

For me, it their live element that sets them apart from the faceless producers that dominate the current musical scene and im sure that a few choice gigs on the festival circuit will see their profile and popularity soar. In my experience, live acts in Dance music have always been a bit hit and miss, so it a refreshing change to see an act that can cut the mustard. Theres more Mountain of One info here

Big Chill Bar residents the Karminsky Experience (James Munns and Martin Dingle), started DJ'ing together in small London clubs in the early '90s. After a stint of successful club nights, recording their sets, and earning themselves a reputation, they ended up playing for Hugh Hefner at several of his Playboy parties.

The duo were soon releasing critically acclaimed lounge-themed compilations for Polygram, and soon after launched their own record label, making their move from behind the decks, to becoming producers, and releasing their full-length debut 'The Power of Suggestion' on Eighteenth Street Lounge Music in 2003 and have continued to release some delightful downtempo music thats incredibly infectious.

As one half of the legendary Lindstrom & Prins Thomas he has been at the forefront of the space disco scene and and his Resident Advisor mix is still on heavy rotation here at Space Camp HQ.

Along with Lindstrom he has produced a multitude of tracks and have remixed everyone from Franz Ferdinand, Annie, Chicken Lips and LCD Soundsystem, as well as continuing to release on Belgiums’ superb Eskimo Recordings. He has played at Space Camp twice this year and both nights have been quality.

Hardy Boy

Ron Hardy is arguably the founder of Chicago house . I never saw him DJ, but I am big fan of his pioneering edits and mixes of disco, soul, funk and early house music

A whos who of iconic house producers like Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Phuture's DJ Pierre and Chip E all credit Hardy as huge influence. Sadly his problems with a heroin addiction forced him to leave the Music Box around 1986 and he died in 1991, and that's the only reason why he's not a star today. . At least theres still some of his mixes and edits available for his memory to live on..

Space Camp in Leeds

Space Camp will be making its first mission to the attic of Asylum and Technique at the Warehouse in Leeds on Saturday 13th October and there’s a quality line-up in the main room downstairs.

Technique and Asylum are two of Leeds most established and best loved nights. They joined forces this time last year for a fortnightly affair at the Warehouse in Leeds and hav had guests like Richie Hawtin, Luciano and Magda who played recently.

On the 13th October Canadian super label Wagon Repair and musical genius Matthew Jonson will be bringing his Cobblestone Jazz outfit to perform one of their first UK shows outside of London. Fresh off the back of their worldwide album launch with K7! and just a month before their appearance at Fabric`s 8th Birthday, Mathew, Daniel Tate & Tyger Dhula, will be showcasing their jamming organic techno sounds.

I will be playing upstairs in the 4clubbers room with Deacon and the lovely Lucy Locket being the other DJs on show.

Stephanie Mills got her first break when Jermaine Jackson referred her to Motown head honcho Berry Gordy, who signed her to his label. Her Motown debut was For the First Time and was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She later went on to achieve commercial success with the disco anthem 'Never knew love like this before' and even found time to briefly marry former Soul Train dancer Jeffrey Daniels of the group Shalamar.

I first heard of her when listening to the seminal Larry Levan 'live at the Paradise Garage mix' which features the track 'put your body in it'. And once the bassline is brought into the mix , it instantly became a favourite of mine and it never fails to make people dance. You can download it here.

Soundtracks

Doing some shopping today and picked up the Vangelis - Themes LP. It’s a bit hit and miss but a particular highlight is Memories of Green from the Mutiny on Bounty OST, as well as the iconic love theme from the film Bladerunner. Vangelis used a technique of recording all tracks simultaneously on tape, using a device especially manufactured for him which he calls the Direct box.

He explained his customary method of approach in an interview with Music Maker. His technique involved connecting as many keyboards as possible to a control-desk, which in turn are directly connected to the applicable tracks of the multi-trackmachine. The idea was to play as many keyboards as possible at the same time, although im sure he has embraced cubase, logic and protools by now. Etienne De Crecy

Space Camp and Junk combine forces to bring you Etienne De Crecy. A lot has changed since the “Super Discount” project took the world by storm in 1997. One can question the influence of the striking “Super Discount” concept and artwork on the introduction of the Euro and the subsequent increase in retail prices resulting in the rapid rise of discount outlets, but no one will question the influence the album had on electronic music.

“Super Discount” started a journey that eventually led to St Germain, Air, Daft Punk, Cassius, Stardust and Bob Sinclair. With its supermarket concept and aptly minimalist design, it was a vivid demonstration of the huge talent of such performers who were to astonish the world over the next few years.

With Superdiscount 3 expected to be on its way in 2008, checking out Etienne De Crecy on the 30th of September in Sprit is a great way to get a sneak preview of what is to come. Support from Philth & Seki, Disco Infiltrators & Dave McDonagh.

Maelstrom first came to Space Camps attention with the excellent edit of Metro Area’s ‘Miura’ . He has a host of cracking edits in his locker and is currently working away on new material for a live set. His latest edit will be played at Space Camp for quite sometime and its rerub a Barbara Roy track called ‘if you want me’.

She was part of one of discos’s first super group Ecstasy, Passion & Pain. Although they only released one album and a handful of singles for the label, they had some great tracks like ‘touch & go’ and ‘ask me’. You can download his edit below, which will be online for a limited time.

Space Camp was launched successfully in Sept 2006 and surprisingly its still orbiting smoothly. Over the past year, we have had a host of international superstars, underground heroes and local chancers down at the camp and our International guest roster has included the likes of : Claude Von Stroke, Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Joakim, I:CUBE, Morgan Geist, In Flagranti, Dirk (Eskimo), Bill Brewster, Dancepig, Pilooski, Shit Robot and Reverso 68.

We celebrate our first Birthday next month and it takes place in the Village on September 8th with our residents at the music controls playing the trademark Space Camp sound. This year Space Camp will playing in the Body & Soul area at the Picnic on the Friday @ 10pm. For the uninitiated, its a chilled out area and it’s differs to the rest of the site. There is still a couple of TBCs and Special Guests to be announced and i believe there’s also a Village Hall late-night stage with more of a reggae vibe to look out for too. The people to check out in the Body & Soul area are YOAV (Island Records), DJ Noel Phelan, Andy Barlow (ex-Lamb),The Egg, Donal Dineen, Liam O’Maonlai, Pressure Drop, Chequerboard, Shane Mannion, Les Bien & Djembe Faso

Aroy Dee is a the only Dutch producer who hates trance and his records have been played at Space Camp since day one. My favourite track is Kiss, which I first heard on a Mark E mix and its is a driving outerspace hypnotic gem. It sounds a bit like Theo Parrish/Larry Heard/Basic Channel collaborating in the studio together.

August 5th saw the first UltraShock event with Prins Thomas lining out for Space Camp. I started off things with tracks like Marc Antona - Extension and Steve Silk Hurley – Jack your Body before Prins took over for the headlining slot. The bearded Norwegian was making his second Space Camp appearance and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand, with classics like Charles B – Lack of Love and Gino Soccio - Remember sitting next to dancefloor gems like the anthemic pilooski edit of Frankie Valli – Beggin.

The lobby bar was kitted out by the genial Synth Eastwood mob with Philth and The Mystery Jets supplying the music. And in the other room, Shock DJs got the party started with FSOL -Papua New Guinea before London scamps Skull Juice took over preceedings and they were followed by the delightful Chick on Speed..

This was one of the most exciting, enjoyable parties we've ever run and we're already hatching plans for another in the next while. In the meantime, you can catch Space Camp DJs in the Village this Saturday. Word.

The Mystery Jets

All the best bands create their own universe. Few, however, create one as strange and bewitching as the Mystery Jets... The Mystery Jets embody British pop at its most invigoratingly weird, previous singles Zoo Time, You Can’t Fool Me Dennis, On My Feet and Alas Agnes have seemed like dispatches from some starry-eyed parallel universe.

They most recently released the Diamonds In The Dark EP on 679 Recordings with Erol Alkan on production duties. They make a rare DJ outing this Sunday and we're more than curious to see what kind of musical landscape they have in store for us at UltraShock on Sunday 5th August.

Space Camp Mix

We have put together a heady mix of music from Norwegian disco to Belgian balearica with tracks from Aeroplane, Ray Mang, Todd Terje, Prins Thomas, Metro Area, Jimpster as well as some other hidden gems. We will be putting together Volume 002 next month, which will be an unpretentious selection of summer music to make up for the absence of sunshine here in Dublin.

Ronnie Jones

Ronnie Jones is American dj and disco pioneer who recorded four albums with German producer Jurgen S. Korduletsch and collaborated with Claudja Barry in making the European and Canadian charts with It Takes Two. Ronnie's big success came with "Soulsister" in Canada. The above cited albums were "Looking for Action", "Fox On The Run" and "Games2", which included "Video Games".

Todd Terje has been one of the most prolific producers of disco edits over the past couple years and he has reworked the Ronnie Jones track "Me & Myself" into spaced out basement disco. You can download it below.

Optimo

JD Twitch and JG Wilkes are the Optimo head honchos. These guys are genuinely eclectic and are known for playing fun records across all genres, as well as being one of the few djs around to utilize ableton effectively.

They set up Optimo (Espacio) in November 1997 and it continues to take place at the Sub Club in Glasgow every Sunday. They got their name from a song by Liquid Liquid which sums up how they wanted the core of the night to sound - raw, percussive, sleazy. Its a sound that us here at Space Camp are big fans of.

Black Strobe

Currently causing a stir is Audion's remix of Black Strobe's 'I'm a Man' from the debut album 'Burn Your Own Church'.

The 4 piece band are booked to perform their gothic tinged, electronically raucous live show in festivals from Japan (Wire) to Global Gathering (UK) to Pukkelpop in Belgium and now Arnaud Rebotini has also created his own solo live show using a plethora of old synths (none produced later than 1984!) to add to the mix.

Fill Bill

Bill Brewster was our first international guest when he played alongside Metro Area's Morgan Geist back in October 2006. It was cracking night and he played a mystic brew of gritty funk, obscures disco and lush house music finishing up with Bob Marley. Which was nice.

He has been Djing for over 20 years and collecting records for an impressive 35. His influences came from the late John Peel who introduced him to many styles of music from Glam Rock to Motown. In his early 20's he formed a funk band, which managed to get a record deal, however, they never made it big but Bill's love and enthusiasm for music didn't falter for a second.

Bill's first big break in the music industry when he was approached by Mixmag some 18 years ago whilst writing for a football magazine. This was the start of a musical career spanning over 20 years. Other magazines Brewster has been involved with include Muzik and Jockey Slut, not to mention the four books he has published with the help of long-term friend Frank Broughton. (Last Night a Dj Saved My Life, How To Dj (Properly), The Manual and Time Out Interviews.

He has also produced some fantastic edits, two of which are Hot Chocolate – ‘Dance’ and Fox – ‘S-s-single bed’.

Prins Thomas - August 5th @ the Pod

This is it, the big one for Space Camp...

Prins Thomas was our number one choice of guests we wanted to work with when we started Space Camp and this will be his second appearence at the controls. As one half of the legendary Lindstrom & Prins Thomas he has been at the forefront of the space disco italo/ cosmic scenes and has been one of the most prolific artists in the genre. Along with Lindstrom he has producing a multitude of tracks and have remixed everyone from Franz Ferdinand, Annie, Chicken Lips and LCD Soundsystem, as well as continuing to release on Belgiums' superb Eskimo Recordings.

Prins has torn up clubs all over globe with his distinctive brand of freakydisco, electro-boogie,italo and his remix of Hatchback - White Diamond is an anthem in the making.

Bam - a - lam

Dirk De Ruyck [ Eskimo ] is a gentleman and when he played at Space Camp he treated us to some fantastic records that had me running to the DJ booth. One of the tracks he played has become a quilty pleasure of mine and its the Ben Liebrand remix of pop classic Ram Jam - Black Betty. I am not usually a fan of Mr.Liebrand, however this track is a winner on the dancefloor and thats a fact.

Todd Terje

Friday June 29 saw the first co-promotion between SpaceCamp and Downtownsounds, with Jon Averill and Steve Manning kicking things off downstairs and Todd Terje doing the headlining slot. The Norwegian disco maestro had the crowd in the palm of his hand, with classics like Kano 'Its War', Crusaders 'My Lady' and Magazine 60's 'Don Quixote'.

Mr Olsen is of course a regular visitor to Space Camp and if you can name a disco track, he has probably edited it. One of my favourite edits is the delightful rerub of the classic Chic track - ‘ I want your love’.

He has extended and looped the best parts, so its starts off with the sample ‘ I can’t kick this feeling’ which was also used moodymann, before breaking into the original. Anyway if you don't have this version - get it now..

Terje also has done some cracking edits for Mindless Boogie under the name Wade Nichols and his remix of studio –lifes a beach is a record you should own.
